Summer is here at the Hornby Island Recycling depot, and with summer the dry weather and the DUST is back as well. We would like to ask our visitors to reduce their driving speed as much as possible when you are visiting the recycling depot, as higher speeds increase the amount of dust our patrons, volunteers and staff must breathe.
The CVRD has been investigating the possibly have some portions of the recycling depot paved to fight the dusty environment and their committee approved the following staff recommendations:
“THAT paving the Hornby Island Recycling Depot be deferred until sufficient reserves are available to allow for economically feasible and operationally effective paving; AND FINALLY THAT paving of the entrance road not be considered at this time to reduce unnecessary cost.”
To fight the dust this year the CVRD has hired “Shade Tankers” to spread an application of the same dust suppression material, that they utilize on Slade Road, Strachan Road, and the access road of tribune bay.
Another reminder that at the moment we do not have any way to divert e-cigarettes and vaping paraphernalia. These items should be brought back to the point of purchase for recycling.
Our Free Store Volunteers would like to request that only items that are in excellent working order should be donated to the Free Store. We have to discard and pay for the disposal of many donations that are beyond re-using, repurposing, or recycling.
A reminder to all our returning summer guets that our tipping fee prices were raised by $1.00 per bag across the board at the beginning of the year. This was to align with the CVRD price increase at their landfill.
A reminder that as of November 2023 we are collecting used cooking oil which can be dropped off on Fridays at our Product-Care centre.
We are working to establish a “We-Store” construction materials repurposing yard and are waiting for materials to erect a fence to enclose the repurposing yard. Note that we are still looking for volunteers to help erect said fencing. Once the fencing is installed, we will also need an on-site volunteer crew, so we can collect useful construction and demolition waste for repurposing again.
The CVRD build an addition to the recycling building to house electronics and electrical appliances. These items are now classified as medium risk materials are representing the fastest growing recycling stream in Canada and hope to be able to use the building before the fall.
A reminder, when wanting to drop off drywall, to call ahead to confirm our drywall bin is on the island and that there is room for what you want to drop. Also make sure you have filled out the required paperwork available at http://hirra.ca/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Dry-Wall-Waste-Disposal-Application-March-2017.pdf.
When planning to drop off large loads of construction waste or scrap metal, call ahead to ensure that there is sufficient space in our waste bins for what you are planning to bring.
Lastly, we want to take the opportunity to thank our hardworking staff, at the Recycling Depot and the HIRRA office, our volunteers in the Free Store, in the gardens, the recycling committee, and the HIRRA executive for all their contributions to making our depot run so smoothly.
……See you all up on depot hill.
