February 2026

The winter season is still among us, and we are open, Fridays through Sundays, 9 am until 1 pm.

Please note that due to the high cost of liability insurance for snow removal, HIRRA, the Recycling Committee, and management have decided to close the recycling depot during periods of unsafe snow conditions. Depot staff will continue to clear snow to promote faster melting and to complete essential on-site tasks. The depot will remain closed to the public until all snow and ice have thawed and conditions are deemed safe for access. We thank you for your understanding.

In January, prices at the CVRD landfill for tipping fees increased, and we needed to follow suit. Prices increased by $1 per bag, for all size bags, and we hope to freeze their price until 2029.

Remember that the Free Store Volunteers would like to request that only items that are in excellent working order are taken to the Free Store.

Note that the We-Store, construction and demolition waste repurposing area is now open. Currently, the We-Store will be open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 until noon. We are still looking for more We-Store volunteers to monitor the items coming in, making sure they meet the We-Store’s requirements.

End-of-Life Electronics, all your old and broken electronics and electronic appliances, are now accepted in the new recycling building addition. Please deposit working electronics and electric appliances in the Free Store for our patrons to reuse.

We still have many patrons coming to the recycling centre not knowing that all corrugated cardboard has to be dry and be cut down to pieces smaller than 76cm by 76cm (30 inches by 30 inches), so staff can easily process the material, and that cardboard boxes are not trampled and stomped on. Stomped-on and trampled cardboard boxes will need to be un-stomped and un-trampled by staff before they can be processed. The staff really appreciates your help.

Also, it is important that you call ahead when you want to drop off drywall, large loads of construction waste or scrap metal, trailers, 5th wheels, and boats, in order so we can confirm that we can accommodate you. For drywall, make sure you have filled out the required paperwork available at https://recycling.hirra.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Dry-Wall-Waste-Disposal-Application-March-2017.pdf. For trailers and boats, it is important that there are no fluids present whatsoever.

As always, we want to thank all our volunteers in the Free Store, the We-Store, in the gardens, at the recycling committee, and the HIRRA executive, for all the time that they have been donating over the years.

Finally, we want to thank our hardworking staff and the HIRRA staff for their contributions to making our depot run smoothly.

……See you all up on Depot Hill.
