Now that we are in July and August, our opening hours are Thursdays through Sundays, 9 am–1 pm. The Free Store and We‑Store will operate from 10 am – 12 noon.
As our construction and demolition prices increased considerably last October, and If you’re building or renovating on the island, you may want to take advantage of our We-Store where you can save a bit of money by bringing your usable construction & demolition waste, — as there’s no charge for dropping off usable construction & demolition waste to the We-Store.
Since the Free Store popularity has grown immensely over the years, we have been inundated by visitors who want to take part in the great experience of shopping for free. Of course we love all the visitors, however, we are now running out of room to park all you Free Store visitors up on depot hill and we ask when coming to visit the Free Store consider carpooling or walking up the trail from the old fire hall.
Also, when visiting the Free Store with your little ones, make sure that you keep a diligent eye on them. The parking lot gets extremely busy and children need to be supervised at all times. Make sure they have footwork and do not run around barefoot, as there are many possible sources of injury at the foot level. This is why we have a “No Shoes, No Shirt, No Service” policy.
The Free Store volunteers wanted to let everyone know how much they appreciate the help of some kids who, when finished playing with the toys in the Free Store, take the time to clean up the toy area when they are done playing, and hope that more kids can follow their example.
A reminder that we still have some Earth Machine compost bins available at $125, taxes included.
If you are planning to bring up any gas-powered equipment like lawnmowers, weed trimmers and leaf blowers, it is required that “all” fluids have been drained from the machine for us to accept the item. This means gas and oil. Remaining fluids in the machine are an extreme fire hazard, and it is important that those power tools are drained completely of their fluids before they are brought to the depot or Free Store. Please note that we are required to check all gas-powered equipment when you bring it to the depot and will have to refuse it if “any” fluids are detected.
The CVRD has applied dust suppression treatment to the road and parking lot just before the summer. To maintain a low dust level, and for road safety in general, we would like to ask you to please not speed up the depot hill or anywhere on the recycling depot property and follow the posted speed limit of 15km/h.

And remember all corrugated cardboard must be dry and cut down to pieces smaller than 76 cm × 76 cm (30 in × 30 in) so staff can process it efficiently. Don’t stomp or crush boxes. Any trampled cardboard has to be un‑stomped by staff before it can go through the system.
