Greetings from all of us here at the Hornby Island Recycling depot. 2025 has arrived and we are currently enjoying the short winter slowdown while the island is not flooded with tourist and visitors. So, we use this time to catch up with work that was left over from the previous year and to get ready for this year’s season.
We wanted to remind everyone that we are now collecting used cooking oil for recycling. You can drop off your used cooking oil every Friday at the Product-Care centre.
The HIRRA membership has approved our 2025 operating budget, and we hope to receive CVRD approval for our 2025 operating budget by May 2025.
Our website was resurrected by Angela Hoeppner and we want to take this opportunity to thank her again for all the work she did. You can now find us online at https://recycling.hirra.ca
We want to thank Jack Carriers for all his help laying out the “We Store” repurposed building material yard fence. We are currently waiting for some danger trees removed and then will be installing the perimeter fencing and will be looking for volunteers to help us. Upon the completion of installation of said fencing we will be looking for a volunteer group, like in the free store, to monitor the incoming and outgoing materials.
We are currently have run out of composters but have ordered another load of Earth Machine composters. We will let you know when they have arrived. Unfortunately, their shipping cost has increased, and we will now have to charge $125.00 to break even.
More stringent environmental regulations were introduced in 2024, and we are required to protect streams, such as electric appliances and electronics, that were previously left outside and exposed to the environment. The CVRD’s contractor almost completed the construction of the addition to the recycling building which will house electronics and electrical appliances. It is notable that this stream is currently the fastest growing recycling stream in Canada. Electronics in working order will be collected in the Free Store for our patrons.
We want to remind you again, when wanting to drop off drywall to call ahead to confirm we can accept your drywall, our drywall bin is on the island, and that there is room for what you want to drop. Make sure you have filled out the required paperwork available at https://recycling.hirra.ca/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Dry-Wall-Waste-Disposal-Application-March-2017.pdf.
Also, when planning to drop off large loads of construction waste, please call ahead to ensure that there is sufficient space in our waste bins for what you are planning to bring.
We want to take the opportunity again to thank our hardworking staff for their contributions to making our depot run smoothly.
Finally, we want to thank all our volunteers in the Free Store, in the gardens, and the recycling committee for all the time that you have been donating over the years.
……See you all up on depot hill.
